Chery Is Expanding Beyond SUVs in South Africa — Could the Arrizo 8 Be Next?
The Chery Q and the upcoming KP31 bakkie prove the brand is thinking beyond the SUV in South Africa. Could the international Arrizo 8 sedan be the next chapter?

If you have spent any time in a Chery showroom in South Africa, you will know the brand almost entirely through its SUVs. The Tiggo 4. The Tiggo 7. The Tiggo 8 and the flagship Tiggo 9. That is the line-up that turned Chery into one of the fastest-growing vehicle brands in the country.
But look a little closer and the picture is changing. Chery South Africa has introduced the Chery Q, its first fully electric passenger car — a compact EV, not an SUV. The KP31 double-cab bakkie is on the way, expected in 2027. One badge, three very different body styles.
Which raises the question every Chery watcher is quietly asking: could the Arrizo 8 — the brand's flagship sedan sold in international markets — one day join them?
The hero of this story
The Arrizo 8: Chery's flagship sedan, as seen overseas
Overseas, the Arrizo 8 sits at the top of Chery's sedan range. It is a properly large, properly premium four-door — 4 757 mm long with a 2 770 mm wheelbase, a sweeping 24.6-inch dual-screen display across the dash, a 540-degree panoramic camera system and 50W wireless phone charging.
Depending on the market, it is offered with Chery's 1.6-litre and 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engines, paired with a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission, and it can be specified with up to 18 advanced driver-assistance functions. In short: the same tech-forward formula that made the Tiggo range a local hit, wrapped in a sedan body.

Expansion proof #1
The Chery Q: the first step beyond the SUV
The clearest signal yet is already parked in South African showrooms. The Chery Q — the brand's first electric vehicle locally — is a compact EV priced from R349 900, aimed squarely at first-time buyers and city commuters. It is the first Chery passenger car sold here that isn't shaped like an SUV, and it quietly rewrote what South Africans expect the badge to mean. For the purposes of this story, it is simple evidence: Chery South Africa is willing to sell something other than a Tiggo.
Expansion proof #2
The KP31: a bakkie with a South African name coming
Then there is the KP31. Chery is preparing a double-cab bakkie for the South African market, expected in 2027 — and in a genuinely clever move, Chery invited South Africans to take part in naming the vehicle. The KP31 will take the brand into one of the country's most competitive and fiercely loyal segments.
An electric city car. A double-cab bakkie. Add a flagship sedan to that list, and Chery's South African story starts to look less like an SUV range and more like a full-line assault.

Final word
Could the Arrizo 8 be next?
Here is what we know for certain: nothing has been confirmed. Chery South Africa has not announced the Arrizo 8, has not dated it, and has not published a single local specification or price. Any claim otherwise would be speculation dressed up as news.
But the direction of travel is hard to ignore. Chery has already stepped outside the SUV box with the Chery Q. It is preparing to do it again with the KP31. The brand's product cadence is accelerating — and the Arrizo 8 is the natural next piece of the puzzle, a flagship sedan that would give the badge a presence in a segment it has barely touched locally.
If — and it remains a big if — the Arrizo 8 ever gets the green light for South Africa, you will read about it here first. Until then, watch this space.
