The Cheapest Electric and Hybrid Cars in South Africa Right Now
Electric cars are finally within reach in South Africa — but the smartest buy isn't always a full EV. Here's what an EV really costs, and when a plug-in hybrid is the better call.

Electric is getting closer — but be honest about your life first
Electric vehicles make brilliant sense if you can charge at home, do mostly urban kilometres, and have a second car for long trips. If you regularly do 500 km stretches between cities, a plug-in hybrid or a good petrol hybrid will serve you better right now.
The most affordable ways in
The entry point to new EVs in South Africa is now under R600 000. The iCAUR V23 at R519 900 is currently the sharpest-priced new electric SUV on the market — and it's a proper city-sized SUV, not a quadbike with doors.
Don't ignore plug-in hybrids
If you want electric driving without the range stress, plug-in hybrids are the sweet spot. The Chery Tiggo 7 PHEV (from R619 900) and the Tiggo 8 PHEV (from R729 900) let you do your daily commute on battery and switch to petrol for the holidays. You'll need a wallbox or at least a dedicated plug point to get the best out of them.
What to budget beyond the price
- Home charging: a proper wallbox installation typically costs a few thousand rand.
- Insurance: EVs can insure slightly higher — get a quote before you commit.
- Electricity: charging at home still costs far less per kilometre than petrol, even with our tariffs.
