Lesedi's Take: 5 Things I Tell Every First-Time Car Buyer
After years of handing keys to first-time buyers, these are the five things I say to every one of them — before the paperwork, before the deposit, and definitely before the heart takes over.

I've walked a lot of first-time buyers to their first car. The excitement is real — and so are the mistakes. Here are the five things I say to almost every first-timer who sits down with me.
1. Buy the payments, not the car
Don't ask "can I afford this car?" — ask "can I afford this car, insured, fuelled and serviced, every single month?" A car you love that eats your budget becomes a car you resent. Start with the affordability calculator, not the showroom.
2. Test drive it on your roads
A 10-minute loop around the block tells you nothing. Ask to drive it on the road you actually commute on. You'll learn more in that one drive than in a week of YouTube reviews.
3. A deposit changes everything
Even a small deposit lowers your instalment, your interest bill and often your insurance premium. Skip the "no deposit" temptation if you can — future you will say thank you.
4. Know your trade-in before you shop
If you're replacing an old car, get its value sorted early — request a trade-in valuation before you fall in love with something. A known trade-in value is negotiating power.
5. Buy from someone who answers the phone after delivery
The handover is the start of the relationship, not the end of it. When something needs attention months down the line, you want the same person picking up. That's the deal I make with every customer — read a bit about how I work, and if that sounds like the experience you want, come talk to me.
