A price gap of about half a million rand doesn't usually make for an honest comparison. Between the Chery Tiggo 8 Pro Max and the BMW X3, though, that gap — and what each side does with it — is precisely the story. One is South Africa's most generously specified seven-seat family SUV at R669 900. The other is the Rosslyn-built premium SUV crowned the 2025 South African Car of the Year. The question buyers keep asking us: is the prestige worth it, or does the practicality win?

Pricing and availability in South Africa

Both are new, both are officially on sale, and both are readily available — but the entry points could not be further apart.

The Chery Tiggo 8 Pro Max line-up is short and sharp: the Executive 2.0TGDI 7DCT at R669 900 and the all-wheel-drive Executive AWD at R729 900, per Chery South Africa's official model page. Every Tiggo 8 Pro Max is a seven-seater.

The BMW X3 (G45, on sale since 2025) is built at BMW Group Plant Rosslyn and offers a far broader ladder. Current recommended retail prices run from R1 077 260 for the X3 20, through the X3 20 Pure Design at R1 122 260, the X3 20d xDrive at R1 165 917, the X3 30e xDrive plug-in hybrid at R1 289 500 and up to the X3 M50 at R1 565 447. The cheapest diesel costs roughly R496 000 more than the flagship Tiggo 8 Pro Max — before dealer costs, licence and registration.

That gap frames everything that follows. We've compared the entry petrol X3 20 Pure Design against the Tiggo 8 Pro Max Executive: each maker's accessible version of a midsize family SUV.

Exterior styling and road presence

The G45 X3's monolithic design language — one clean body volume, minimal shutlines and the reinterpreted kidney grille with contour lighting — reads unmistakably premium. On 19-inch wheels the Pure Design looks properly expensive without shouting, and it's a design that ages slowly.

The Tiggo 8 Pro Max plays a different game: big chrome-trimmed grille, illuminated Chery logo, panoramic sunroof and 19-inch alloys on a 4 720 mm body. It looks more expensive than it is — the classic Chery formula. Where the X3 is austere and resolved, the Tiggo is ornate and expressive.

Inside the BMW X3

BMW's cabin is the cleaner and more technologically coherent of the two. The curved display spanning instrument panel and touchscreen runs BMW Operating System 9 with QuickSelect, the illuminated Interaction Bar sweeps ambient light across the dash, and the materials feel durable rather than decorative. The X3 20 Pure Design adds electrically adjustable sport seats, a panorama glass roof, wireless charging and a Harman/Kardon surround-sound system as standard.

It's a five-seat cabin, and a very good one: quiet, spacious up front, with rear room comfortable for adults. The X3 never claims a third row — that's what BMW's larger SUVs are for.

Inside the Chery Tiggo 8 Pro Max

Chery counters with spectacle. The dual-curve 24.5-inch screen wraps around the driver, the 50 W wireless charging pad is faster than most premium setups, and the front seats are heated and ventilated — rare under R700 000. An eight-speaker Sony audio system, a 360-degree camera and layered ambient lighting keep the tech flowing, with nine airbags and 15 ADAS functions underneath it all.

The layout is busier than the BMW's and some plastics sit a class below the X3's. But the features-per-rand ratio is not a contest — it's a rout.

Passenger space and seven-seat practicality

This is where the two cars fundamentally diverge. The Tiggo 8 Pro Max carries seven; the X3 carries five. Chery's third row is occasional-use — a 1 930-litre boot with all seats folded becomes 892 litres with the third row stowed and a 117-litre slot with all seven upright, so the back row is really for children or short trips. It's there when you need it, which is how most seven-seat SUVs get used in South Africa.

The X3 can't play that game, but its five-seat practicality is deep: 570 litres behind the rear seats expanding to 1 700 litres, plus an electrically operated tow hitch good for 2 400 kg. If you genuinely need seven seats weekly, the Chery is the only one that qualifies.

Engines, performance and fuel consumption

The X3 20 Pure Design pairs a 2.0-litre turbo-petrol engine with 48-volt mild-hybrid assistance for 148 kW and 335 Nm, an eight-speed automatic driving the rear wheels, 0–100 km/h in 8.5 seconds and a claimed 7.5 L/100km (WLTP). The 20d xDrive diesel — 153 kW, 6.2 L/100km claimed — remains the efficiency pick.

The Tiggo 8 Pro Max Executive runs a 2.0-litre turbocharged direct-injection engine with 187 kW and 390 Nm through a seven-speed DCT, officially 8.7 L/100km; the AWD version adds six driving modes. On paper the Chery out-powers the entry BMW; on the road the X3's chassis tuning and refinement are a clear class above. That is what the extra half-million buys.

Two honesty notes. The figures above are laboratory-test numbers (WLTP for BMW, the manufacturer's official cycle for Chery) — real-world consumption will be higher for both, and claimed 0–100 km/h times assume ideal conditions.

Warranty, servicing and ownership costs

Chery's ownership story is the strongest of any mainstream brand here: the Tiggo 8 Pro Max carries a 5-year/150 000 km vehicle warranty, a 10-year/1-million km engine warranty for the first owner and a 5-year/60 000 km service plan. For buyers who keep cars long, nothing in this comparison touches that.

BMW counters with its Motorplan: a 5-year/100 000 km service and maintenance plan already included in the retail price, backed by a nationwide dealer network and strong resale values. A used X3 typically holds its value better — the one column where the premium badge genuinely pays you back. Service costs are higher on the BMW once the Motorplan lapses; budget for that honestly.

Which SUV makes sense for which buyer?

Choose the Tiggo 8 Pro Max if you need seven seats, want maximum technology for minimum money and value the unmatched engine warranty. It's the rational choice — the one that leaves roughly R450 000 for your bond, education or emergency fund.

Choose the BMW X3 if the badge and its consequences matter: sharper dynamics, the quieter cabin, better resale and a premium dealership experience. It costs more every month but holds its worth and driver engagement better.

The DWL Journal verdict

Verdicts like this one shouldn't be awards; they should be mirrors. On pure capability per rand, the Chery Tiggo 8 Pro Max wins decisively — more seats, more power, more kit, a longer engine warranty, at less than 60% of the BMW's price. On refinement, dynamics, prestige and resale, the BMW X3 remains the benchmark it has always been. Prestige or practicality? They are now two different cars' worth of money apart — and for most South African families, the Tiggo 8 Pro Max delivers more of what an SUV is actually for.
