Chery and JLR Revive Freelander Name with 460 kW Plug-in Hybrid SUV
The new FREELANDER 8 combines a 460 kW plug-in hybrid powertrain, dual-motor all-wheel drive and advanced off-road technology. With international launches planned from 2027, the big question for South African motorists is whether the new SUV will eventually arrive in right-hand drive.

New Model Reveal
The Freelander name is returning to the automotive conversation, but not quite in the form older Land Rover enthusiasts might remember.
FREELANDER is being relaunched as a standalone brand through a partnership between Chery and Jaguar Land Rover (JLR). Its first major model, the FREELANDER 8, is a plug-in hybrid SUV combining substantial claimed power, dual-motor all-wheel drive and a suite of technology aimed at both everyday driving and challenging terrain.
The vehicle made its international debut in Abu Dhabi on 29 September 2026. Further details were revealed at FREELANDER Nightfall in Wuhu, China, on 19 October, during the 2026 Chery International User Summit.
For South African motorists, the announcement is particularly interesting because it connects Chery's electrification and manufacturing capabilities with a name associated with Land Rover's history. It also lands during a busy stretch for Chery locally, which has included the launch of the flagship 2026 Tiggo 9 range in South Africa.
However, the new FREELANDER should be understood as a new brand developed through the partnership, rather than simply an updated version of the original Freelander.
There is also an important local caveat: South African availability has not been confirmed.
A New Chapter for the Freelander Name
The FREELANDER 8 represents the first major expression of the new brand's international ambitions.
According to the announcement, the partnership combines JLR-led design with Chery's vehicle technology and global supply network. The Middle East will be the starting point for the brand's international rollout.
Two cabin configurations have been revealed: a six-seat version and a five-seat version. The five-seat model gives buyers an alternative to the three-row layout, although final specifications and equipment may vary across markets.
The name may be familiar, but the new vehicle should be assessed on its own merits. Its eventual success will depend on factors such as pricing, quality, reliability, ownership costs and how well its technology performs in everyday use.
460 kW and 662 Nm from a Plug-in Hybrid System
The FREELANDER 8's headline figures are substantial.
In Middle East specification, it combines a 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine with a 34.12 kWh lithium iron phosphate battery and dual-motor all-wheel drive.
The manufacturer quotes combined peak outputs of 460 kW and 662 Nm, with a claimed 0–100 km/h acceleration time of 5.8 seconds.
These figures place performance high on the vehicle's list of talking points. However, maximum power and acceleration do not tell the whole story about a large SUV. Weight, efficiency, braking, ride comfort and how the powertrain responds in ordinary traffic will also influence the driving experience.
As with any plug-in hybrid, the way the vehicle is charged and driven will affect its overall efficiency.
Electric Range and Charging
The FREELANDER 8 is quoted with an electric driving range of 110 km and a combined total range of 886 km when the battery is fully charged and the fuel tank is full.
These are manufacturer-stated combined-cycle figures for the Middle East model. Real-world results may differ according to driving style, traffic, terrain, temperature, load and charging habits.
The announced charging specifications include:
- 11 kW AC charging.
- DC fast charging from 20% to 80% in 20 minutes or less under the stated conditions.
The battery uses lithium iron phosphate chemistry. Final charging compatibility, charging times and range figures for any future South African version would need to be confirmed.
For local buyers, the important question is not only how far the vehicle can travel on electric power, but also how easily it can be charged at home and on longer journeys. For context on what electrified motoring currently costs locally, see our guide to the cheapest electric and hybrid cars in South Africa.
Developed for More Than Smooth Roads
The FREELANDER 8's off-road technology is another major part of the announcement.
The vehicle uses dual-chamber air suspension and continuously controlled damping, allowing the chassis to adjust to changing surfaces. Its ground clearance can reportedly reach 266 mm.
The announced traction systems include a virtual centre differential lock and an electronic limited-slip differential. These systems are designed to manage torque distribution when grip becomes limited.
An Intelligent All-Terrain System combines the powertrain and chassis controls through nine operating modes. The manufacturer describes seven terrain programmes, including Sand Mode, alongside Smart and Expert modes.
Under the relevant test conditions, FREELANDER quotes the ability to climb a 70% gradient, equivalent to approximately 35 degrees, and wade through water up to 900 mm deep.
These are significant manufacturer claims, but they should not be treated as a guarantee of performance in every situation. Actual off-road ability depends on vehicle configuration, tyres, ground conditions, driver judgement and the limits specified by the manufacturer.
The figures also apply to the announced Middle East specification and should not be assumed to represent a future South African model.
A Technology-Led Cabin
Inside, the FREELANDER 8 takes a digital approach to the modern SUV cabin.
A Qualcomm SA8295P automotive-grade processor supports the vehicle's digital systems, including a 46.3-inch Mini LED far-side screen.
The manufacturer also announces L2+ driver-assistance technology as standard, more than 30 driver-assistance functions and an AI Voice Assistant powered by a large language model.
The voice assistant has been developed specifically for the FREELANDER brand, with the aim of allowing more natural interaction between occupants and the vehicle.
Automated valet parking is also planned for selected markets, subject to operating conditions.
These technologies may help distinguish the FREELANDER 8 in a competitive premium SUV market. Nevertheless, the usefulness of such systems depends on how intuitive they are, how reliably they operate and whether they are supported in the local market.
The final South African specification, if the vehicle is introduced here, will be particularly important.
Development Included Extensive Testing
According to the manufacturer, the development programme involved more than 1,000 test vehicles, including over 200 dedicated to all-terrain durability testing.
The company reports that the wider programme covered 2.15 million kilometres.
These figures provide an indication of the scale of the reported development programme. They are not a substitute for independent reliability data or long-term ownership experience.
As the FREELANDER brand expands, buyers will want to see how the vehicles perform outside controlled development environments and how the manufacturer supports owners over time.
When Will FREELANDER Arrive in Right-Hand-Drive Markets?
The international rollout is planned in three stages.
The first phase is scheduled to begin in the United Arab Emirates in the first quarter of 2027, followed by expansion across the Middle East and other left-hand-drive markets.
The second phase is expected to focus on right-hand-drive markets, with Australia and New Zealand identified as priorities.
The third phase is intended to extend the brand into continental Europe, followed by the United Kingdom and Ireland.
South Africa has not been confirmed as a launch market, and no local price or launch date has been announced.
Although the planned right-hand-drive phase makes the announcement relevant to South African motorists, it would be premature to conclude that the FREELANDER 8 will launch locally. Market selection, final specifications and timing remain subject to official confirmation.

DWL Journal Verdict: An Interesting Partnership, but Local Confirmation Matters
The FREELANDER 8 is an ambitious first statement for a new standalone brand. Its 460 kW plug-in hybrid powertrain, claimed 110 km electric range, all-wheel-drive system and off-road technology give it a broad set of headline features.
The Chery–JLR partnership also makes the announcement more significant than an ordinary new-model reveal. It brings together two companies with different histories and areas of expertise, while giving the new FREELANDER brand an opportunity to establish its own identity.
But the specification sheet is only part of the story.
For South African buyers, the decisive considerations would include pricing, real-world fuel and electric efficiency, charging compatibility, warranty coverage, servicing costs, parts availability and the strength of the local dealer network — the same ownership questions we weigh in guides such as what salary you need to buy a car in South Africa.
The return of a familiar name may attract attention, but buyers should judge the new vehicle on its own quality, capability and ownership proposition.
Our view: The FREELANDER 8 is one to watch as the brand prepares for international expansion. However, South African motorists should wait for an official local announcement before treating it as a realistic purchase option.
