Real cars. Real advice. The right drive for you.

Honda South Africa has launched its first hybrid CR-V. The new CR-V RS e:HEV AWD — the flagship of the CR-V range — is on sale at R949,900 (recommended retail price), bringing Honda's self-charging e:HEV technology, standard all-wheel drive and a five-seat cabin to South Africa in a single, fully specified derivative.
It arrives at a telling moment. Family-SUV buyers in South Africa now expect hybrid efficiency without the complexity of a plug, and the market around the CR-V has never been more crowded. Honda's answer is a two-motor system that behaves like an electric car in town and a conventional car on the open road, with no charging cable in sight. Here is what the new Honda CR-V hybrid South Africa launch means in practice: the price, the technology, the practicality, and how it stacks up against the alternatives on local sale.

Honda CR-V e:HEV South Africa: price and specifications
Honda South Africa lists one derivative at launch: the 2.0 RS e:HEV AWD, priced at R949,900 (recommended retail price). RS styling gives the CR-V a confident stance, with gloss black detailing on the front and rear bumpers, roof rails, a tailgate spoiler, 19-inch black alloy wheels and dual tailpipe finishers. LED headlights with Auto High Beam, LED daytime running lights and LED front fog lights are standard, along with a panoramic sunroof.
Five paint options are offered at launch: Platinum White (Pearlescent), Lunar Silver (Metallic), Meteoroid Grey (Metallic), Canyon River Blue (Metallic) and Blazing Red (Pearlescent).

How Honda's self-charging hybrid system works
The CR-V e:HEV uses Honda's two-motor hybrid system, and it is worth being precise about the numbers because they describe two different things. Under the bonnet sits a 2.0-litre naturally aspirated Atkinson-cycle petrol engine producing 106 kW and 189 Nm. That engine does not always drive the wheels directly. Instead, Honda's system moves seamlessly between three states: EV Drive, where the electric motor alone powers the wheels; Hybrid Drive, where the petrol engine generates electricity for the motor that drives the wheels; and Engine Drive, where the engine is connected directly to the wheels for efficient highway cruising.
The front electric motor produces 135 kW and 335 Nm, and in everyday driving it is the motor that does most of the propulsion work. That is why the CR-V e:HEV feels immediate off the line in a way its powertrain figures alone don't suggest: peak torque is electric torque, available from zero rpm.
Does the Honda CR-V hybrid need to be plugged in?
No. This is a self-charging hybrid: the battery tops itself up as you drive and every time you brake, recapturing energy that would otherwise be lost. There is no charging cable, no charging schedule and no change to your routine. You fill it with petrol, and the system manages the rest automatically. For buyers who want the efficiency benefit of electric motor assistance but who park in a complex, travel long distances or simply don't want to think about charging, this is the key selling point.
Honda's three driving modes
The CR-V e:HEV offers Normal, ECON and SPORT modes. ECON prioritises efficiency, softening throttle response for the calmest possible fuel consumption. SPORT sharpens the powertrain's response for a more engaged drive, while Normal balances the two for everyday use. Honda claims a combined fuel consumption figure of 5.4 L/100km for the e:HEV — a manufacturer's claim, so real-world results will vary with driving style, road conditions and load.

Standard all-wheel drive
All-wheel drive is standard on the RS e:HEV AWD, with Honda's on-demand system sending drive to the rear wheels when traction needs it — useful on wet Highveld afternoons, gravel farm roads and mountain passes, and reassuring for buyers stepping up from a front-wheel-drive car. The convenience is that you never have to choose a drivetrain: in South Africa, the hybrid CR-V is the AWD CR-V.
Five-seat configuration and practicality
Unlike some rivals that offer seven seats, the CR-V e:HEV is configured strictly for five — a deliberate choice that Honda pairs with generous space for each of them. Boot space is a useful 581 litres with the rear seats in place, opening up to 1,636 litres with the rear seats folded.
The cabin is where the RS specification earns its keep. Eco-friendly leather upholstery with red stitching covers the seats, with a leather steering wheel and gear knob, sport pedals and a silver instrument panel finish. The driver's seat offers eight-way power adjustment with memory and four-way lumbar support; the front passenger seat is electrically adjustable in four directions. Heated front seats, dual-zone automatic climate control, a hands-free electric tailgate and Smart Keyless Entry with Walk-Away Locking round off the comfort and convenience list. White ambient lighting and the panoramic sunroof lift the cabin after dark.
Technology and driver-assistance features

Technology is comprehensive. A Head-Up Display projects key driving information onto the windscreen, a 10.2-inch TFT multi-information display sits behind the wheel, and a 9-inch touchscreen runs wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto with built-in navigation. A 15W wireless charger, an eight-speaker sound system and four USB ports keep everyone connected.
On safety, Honda SENSING is standard and includes Adaptive Cruise Control with Low Speed Following, Collision Mitigation Braking System, Forward Collision Warning, Lane Keep Assist System and Road Departure Mitigation. LaneWatch shows you what is alongside on the passenger side, and a 360-degree view camera with front and rear parking sensors makes tight parking bays easier. Driver Attention Monitor, Brake Hold, Hill Start Assist and front, side, curtain and knee airbags complete the package.
South African price and ownership considerations
At R949,900, the CR-V RS e:HEV AWD sits firmly in premium territory, and buyers should budget beyond the sticker price for insurance, fuel and routine running costs. On the plus side, the manufacturer-claimed 5.4 L/100km is genuinely frugal for a vehicle of this size, and the single-derivative strategy means there is no trim ladder to climb: every CR-V e:HEV sold locally carries the full specification described above.

Honda CR-V versus relevant Chery alternatives
The obvious local counterpoint is Chery's Tiggo 8 family. On Drive With Lesedi's inventory, the Chery Tiggo 8 Pro starts from R499,900 and the flagship Tiggo 8 Pro Max from R669,900 — official Chery South Africa pricing — which undercuts the CR-V e:HEV by a wide margin while offering seven seats and a long features list. We weighed a similar premium-versus-value question in our BMW X3 vs Chery Tiggo 8 Pro Max comparison.
The honest framing: the Tiggo 8 Pro Max wins on sheer space and price, while the CR-V counters with a self-charging hybrid powertrain, standard AWD, Honda SENSING and the efficiency and refinement of Honda's two-motor system. If seven seats at the lowest possible price is the mission, the Chery is the rational choice. If efficiency, all-wheel drive and a premium five-seat cabin matter more, the Honda earns its premium — and buyers can compare both on our inventory or put them side by side with our compare tool.
Warranty and service plan
Honda South Africa's official CR-V e:HEV model page did not publish warranty and service plan terms for the new derivative at the time of writing. These details should be confirmed directly with Honda Motor Southern Africa or an authorised Honda dealer before purchase, as standard practice with any new-vehicle purchase.
DWL Journal verdict
The new CR-V RS e:HEV AWD is a clear-eyed product. Honda has taken its biggest local SUV, given it the most sensible kind of hybrid — one that never needs plugging in — made all-wheel drive standard, and concentrated the entire range into one properly specified derivative. The R949,900 asking price will be the conversation-stopper, and the value argument from mainstream Chinese rivals is real. But for the buyer who wants a self-charging hybrid with standard AWD in a premium five-seat package, and who plans to keep the car long enough for the efficiency and refinement to pay them back, the CR-V e:HEV makes a coherent case that no rival currently copies.
