Wuhu, China — OMODA has revealed its newest crossover, the OMODA X, at a global debut event in China. It is the clearest look yet at how one of the fastest-growing challenger brands plans to evolve its design language, and it matters to South Africa for one specific reason: the local production programme already under way for the OMODA C4.

A New Direction for OMODA

OMODA has unveiled the all-new OMODA X, offering the clearest indication yet of how the brand plans to evolve its crossover design language in the coming years. The X was revealed at OMODA X Night in Wuhu, China, on 20 October, as part of the 2026 OMODA & JAECOO International User Summit.

Where the OMODA 5 and 7 established the brand's futuristic urban look, the X takes the company's Cyber Mecha design philosophy in a bolder direction, combining geometric forms with a more purposeful, rugged appearance. OMODA positions it as the world's first "cross off-road vehicle" — a statement car intended to blur the boundaries between an urban crossover, an off-roader and a sports car.

This is a design study with intent behind it, not a one-off show car for the sake of headlines. According to OMODA, Mecha-inspired styling will form a central part of the brand's next generation of vehicles, with the X offering an early look at how that language will evolve across future models.

Cyber Mecha: Sharper, Bolder and More Distinctive

The design cues are unambiguous. OMODA describes an assertive wide-body stance, broad shoulders, a tightly sculpted waistline and a sporty silhouette — a shape meant to read as "power ready to be unleashed". Geometric facets inspired by mecha aircraft run across the bodywork, and a signature lightning-style tail-light signature gives the rear a distinctive identity after dark.

Seen side-on, the X carries the tall, squared-off proportions that have become the visual shorthand for the new breed of rugged-styled crossovers, but executed with OMODA's characteristic angular detailing.

At the back, the blocky lighting signature and stepped tailgate emphasise the vehicle's width and give it a stance that is unmistakably more aggressive than anything currently wearing an OMODA badge in South Africa.

Details matter too. The debut car's black alloy wheels with bright orange brake calipers, chunky protective detailing and roof-mounted provisions underline the off-road-flavoured brief.

The OMODA C4 Connection: Why South Africa Matters

For South African readers, the significance of the X lies less in the car itself than in the design direction it previews. Cyber Mecha was first shown to the world on the OMODA C4, a model destined for our market and scheduled to enter local production at the Rosslyn manufacturing facility from the third quarter of 2027.

"The OMODA X gives us a much clearer view of where the brand is heading from a design perspective," says Shannon Gahagan, Head of Brand and Marketing for OMODA & JAECOO and iCAUR South Africa. "The C4 will introduce South African customers to OMODA's Cyber Mecha design direction, and the X shows how that thinking can evolve across the wider range. With the C4 also set to be produced here in South Africa, this next chapter in the brand's design story has particular relevance to our market."

Note: the photographs in this story show the OMODA X revealed at the global debut event. No verified official photographs of the OMODA C4 were included in either press release at the time of writing, so the X is used to illustrate the shared Cyber Mecha design direction. The two vehicles are not the same model.

Beyond the Traditional Crossover

OMODA calls its approach CROSSVOLUTION, and the X is the most literal expression of it yet: the everyday usability of a crossover combined with more expressive styling and a stronger focus on individuality. The company quotes genuine hardware to back the off-road-flavoured positioning, including a ground clearance of 200 mm, a designed wading capability of more than 700 mm, a towing capacity of up to 1 800 kg, a roof load rating of 75 kg and 39 storage spaces around the cabin.

Those figures place the X well outside the usual city-crossover formula, although — as always with a global debut — quoted figures refer to the Chinese-market reveal vehicle and may differ for any future version sold elsewhere.

A Digital Cabin Designed Around the Driver

Inside, the X introduces what OMODA calls the MECHA Command Cockpit, guided by three design principles it labels WILD MECHA, GEOMETRIC and FUNCTIONAL. A twin-wing dashboard layout anchors an X-shaped floating centre console, while an 8.8-inch digital instrument cluster and a 13.2-inch central touchscreen form the digital interface. Physical controls for frequently used functions such as air conditioning and drive modes are retained — a small detail, but a sensible one.

The technology story is where OMODA is aiming hardest. The X debuts the brand's SIAS (Super Intelligent AI Space) conversational assistant, which is designed to respond without wake words or rigid commands; an exclusive X-MODE that adapts vehicle settings to individual driving preferences; and an infrared thermal imaging night-vision system that can flag potential hazards up to 90 metres away. More playfully, there is an Open Mic function with four independent sound-pickup zones for in-car karaoke, and magnetic NFC "MECHA Pets" accessories that interact with the cabin.

Technical caveat: these cabin and technology features were announced for the global (Chinese-market) debut vehicle. Features, specifications and fitment for any future export markets have not been confirmed.

OMODA's Bigger International Ambition

The X arrives at a moment of deliberate expansion for OMODA & JAECOO. The group plans to grow its portfolio to 13 models over the next three years, has recorded more than 1.4 million cumulative global sales in three and a half years, and is now represented in 79 markets.

The debut also carried a co-creation theme: four customers from Indonesia, Brazil, South Africa and Poland each presented their own interpretation of the X, part of OMODA's stated shift from a brand that gives its products a personality to one shaped together by its global users.

Will the OMODA X Come to South Africa?

Not confirmed. OMODA South Africa has not announced the X for local sale, and we will not speculate on a launch date or pricing. What is officially confirmed for our market is the C4: it will launch locally and enter production at Rosslyn from the third quarter of 2027, and it will be the vehicle that introduces South African buyers to the Cyber Mecha design direction in the metal.

Further details on the OMODA X, including its powertrain, specifications and availability, will be announced at a later stage. Until then, the X should be read for what it is: a preview of the styling and technology direction OMODA intends to take across its next generation of models.

The DWL Journal Verdict

We have not driven the OMODA X — this is a debut report based on the manufacturer's official press material and imagery from Wuhu, not a road test. On paper, though, the X is a significant car for the brand: it commits OMODA publicly to a bolder, more rugged design identity, and it backs that styling with genuinely useful off-road-leaning hardware figures.

For South Africans, the practical takeaway is straightforward. The C4 is the story to watch — a Cyber Mecha-styled OMODA built here at Rosslyn from 2027 — and the X tells us the design language it introduces is not a dead end but the start of a wider family. If OMODA executes the C4 well, the X shows there is plenty more where that came from.
